Nevada Travel Guide
Nevada is known as the Silver State and is among the best known and most visited states in America. In addition to Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe, Boulder City, and Carson City are the hotspots in the state. Nevada is of long, empty roads and dusty ghost towns, often little more than a gas station and 24-hour store with a few slot machines in the corner. Lacking any natural assets, it is fortunate that 'Lady Luck' descended on this state to give hundreds of thousands of people a man-made reason for visiting. This is casino country, centered on the capital of kitsch, Las Vegas, and the other smaller towns where the main income earner is gambling.
When it comes to winter activities, Lake Tahoe has it all. Literally it enjoys more snow, more variety and more ways to play than almost anywhere else in the country. Home to 15 world class ski resorts, it provides downhill or cross-country skiing or snowboarding, with a variety of relaxing and equally hair-raising terrains to cover. With more than 300 days of sunshine a year, it is also the perfect destination for the fair weather outdoor enthusiast. While the area is home to 21 championship golf courses, the lake itself is a great playground for watersports enthusiasts. Windsurfers, waterskiers and boaters of all kinds can skim along its surface, scuba divers can explore its depths and sunbathers can stretch out on its white sandy beaches.
Pioneer Territory is about land and about history. Ghost towns, historic mining camps, Joshua trees and large expanses of land characterise this area, which is also home to the newly designated Extraterrestrial Highway. Highway 50, often described as the 'loneliest road in America', runs through Pony Express Territory. This is a scenic route, set with broad valleys and wooded mountains, which leads to the town of Ely, gateway to the Great Basin National Park. Cowboy Territory is famous for wagon trains, cattle drives and cowboy poetry gatherings. Like the rest of the state, the scenery is stunning and provides the inspiration for much of the verse that flows. To top up your holiday, you can go to a pow wows held by one of the native American tribes, whose rich culture covers the entire state.
